We had a compelling conversation with John Thwaites on Humans of Purpose Podcast Episode #73 this week.
John is Chair at ClimateWorks Australia and the Monash Sustainable Development Institute. He’s one of six Co-Chairs of the Leadership Council of the global Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).
During John’s political career, he was central to several major reforms in social policy, health, environment, and water. So, he brings a great deal of knowledge and experience into his current work in advancing the sustainable development goals.
John spoke about how the landscape of social change has evolved with young people and the increased access to technology. It was great to hear that, in comparison to the past, he has observed people today as more self-motivated in creating positive change.
In the conversation, John emphasised that the SDG’s will demand much more than just institutional reform, but also a transformation in every day human behaviour.
“Often, we think these solutions are big solutions or a total change of policy. Whereas sometimes they can be quite small, but they’ve got to be specific to the behaviour that’s causing the problem.”
