#68 Ally Watson – Coding, Tech & Social Enterprise

Posted on the 26/6/18 by Mike Davis

Episode #68 Podcast guest, Ally Watson, epitomises every wonderful thing about girl power. In this podcast conversation, she spoke about her journey into the weird and wonderful world of coding, starting a social enterprise, and what it really means to collaborate with your community.

The world of coding and IT is vastly underrepresented when it comes to of female participation. Ally recalled the feeling of being a part of this minority when she was in university and also notes that the number of women in coding and IT today has not gotten much better.

She is CEO and Co-Founder Code Like A Girl, a social enterprise working to connect women working in computer technology and to open up doors for young girls (especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds) to learn and take on opportunities in the tech world.

Soon, they will be touring to rural municipalities around Australia to extend their reach even further, aiming to touch the lives of 700 girls in 6 months.

Through Code Like A Girl, she is increasing the visibility of women working in tech as role models to young girls.

Ally highlighted that it’s important to be giving access to education and technology to young girls of diverse backgrounds, and that finances should never be a barrier.

She says that increasing access to education, especially to those with disadvantaged backgrounds, leads to a future where there are more diverse products that can uplift more people from the lower socio-economic levels.

Ally is truly leading by example, and we can’t wait to see the future generation of girls taking on the tech space. If you enjoyed our conversation with her, do subscribe by clicking this link, and give us a rad 5-star rating.
